We are the first company in Brunei with a dedicated refrigerants specialty.

The Environmental Solutions division is the latest addition to Radiant Engineering’s lines of business. Despite the idea of creating such division was first mooted years ago, it only came to fruition in 2016 with the hiring of specialist staff with environmental research background.

Initially our focus was on securing engagements from the private sector to conduct Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) research and reporting works. However due to limited market opportunity, we shifted our focus on refrigerants and other ozone depleting substances (ODS) primarily building on our existing expertise in the knowledge of refrigerants due to our business in the air-conditioning & HVAC industry, which consumes the largest amount of ODS.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTANCY IN REFRIGERANTS

We landed a big breakthrough in late 2016 by securing a contract from JASTRE & UNEP (United Nations Environmental Protection) to conduct a nationwide survey on the consumption and inventory of refrigerants and other ODS in Brunei Darussalam (HPMP I Project). Our excellent performance in the HPMP I project led the clients to award the subsequent HPMP II project to Radiant Engineering in early 2020 with a target completion deadline of Q3 2020. Radiant Engineering is now well established in the market as the most experienced environmental consultant in Brunei with regards to refrigerants and ODS.

In our strategic roadmap, this division holds the biggest promise with future plans to develop expertise and capabilities in multiple practice areas within the environmental engineering industry - either by way of hiring the right professionals to develop internal capacity (organically) or via acquisitions of firms with specific expertise or verticals (inorganically) - such as, among others, energy conservation in building design, hazardous & non-hazardous waste management, water & air pollution control and more importantly to become the regional leader for the refrigerants & ozone-depleting substances practice area.

REFRIGERANTS RECOVERY & RECYCLING

Through our subsidiary - GL Recovery & Recycling - we are the first player in the market to offer green HVAC solutions by offering reclaimed refrigerants for HVAC maintenance use by technicians in Brunei. On top of that GL Recovery is currently the only company in Brunei specializing in refrigerant waste management by collecting used refrigerants from M&E contractors/building owners, and working with our exclusive partner in Singapore to conduct the purification process of the used refrigerants in accordance to AHRI standards. We are the exclusive partner of Singapore-based Vemac Pte Ltd (a subsidiary of A-Gas International) and with that partnership we are able to bring green innovative technologies to Brunei, which in the long run will help Brunei to meet its environmental obligations under the Montreal Protocol.

Radiant Engineering secured a landmark contract in Q4 of 2016 to conduct a nationwide survey on the consumption and inventory of ozone depleting substances in Brunei Darussalam.

The initiative was commenced by the United Nations Environmental Protection agency with the contract awarded via the local environmental regulator, Jabatan Alam Sekitar danTaman Rekreasi, and the works required us to liaise very closely with the local ozone officer as well as regional UNEP officers based in Bangkok, Thailand.

The project was completed within a period of 10 months and in order to execute data collection for the whole country, we deployed numerous ground teams totaling over 30 personnels.

Since it was the first time data on ozone depleting substances was ever gathered in Brunei at such scale, ground staffers had to painstakingly visit and talk to stakeholders individually to inspect and record the equipments that make use of ODS. Items that needed to be inspected in order to determine the consumption are very broad such as, among others,:

  • Refrigerators in residential homes, offices, schools, government buildings etc

  • Freezers and display coolers in minimarts, supermarkets etc

  • Air-conditioning in vehicles

  • Air-conditioning (from small wall-mounted units to big air chillers) in residential homes, offices, schools, government buildings etc

  • Cold storage facilities in the food processing industry

Scores of data analysts were deployed to analyse the collected data and conduct data verification with the relevant government departments involved in the importation of the ODS gases. The primary goal was to ascertain an estimate as to the consumption and inventory of ODS gases in Brunei and predict the future trend. As a ratifying member of the Montreal Protocol, Brunei is obliged to comply with the phasing out of certain ODS gases and therefore our report was critical to demonstrate the reality on the ground and also to make recommendations for the Brunei Government to consider following to ensure that Brunei continues to complies with the Montreal Protocol.
